The Stellenbosch Triennale aims to establish Stellenbosch as the premier destination for multi-disciplinary art in Africa by capitalizing on the creative energy sweeping across the continent. For the 2020 Triennale, the Gervanne and Matthias Leridon Collection awarded a grant to artist Tracy Naa Koshie Thompson for the first time. The artist received financial support and professional advice to help her create an original work of art for the Curator exhibition at the Stellenbosch Triennale 2020. The Gervanne and Matthias Leridon Collection intends to promote and support contemporary African art by offering this grant.
Tracy Naa Koshie Thompson, a twenty-three-year-old Ghanaian artist, creates her art around her interests in nature and industrial materials. For example, her recent works were made from synthetic plastics. Tracy Naa Koshie Thompson graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where she earned high honors in Fine Arts (Painting) from the Department of Painting and Sculpture in Kumasi.
The Stellenbosch Triennale is part of a creative cultural renaissance in South Africa, which has brought about new public and private art institutions, such as the Zeitz-MOCAA and the Norval Foundation in Cape Town, and the Javett Art Centre in Pretoria. The Stellenbosch Triennale pushes contemporary art to new heights both in its global impact and the sheer variety of works exhibited. It aims to position creativity in a critical dialogue with society. The Triennaleis a deliberate and purposeful attempt to use creativity, imagination, and public space as a meeting point to engage with both group and singular settings around our past, present, and future existence.
